Melrose PLC was floated on AIM on 28 October 2003 with the strategy of acquiring businesses whose operational performance can be improved to create shareholder value. During December 2005 Melrose moved onto London's main exchange.

In May 2005 Melrose acquired two specialist engineering companies, Dynacast and McKechnie, for an enterprise value of £429 million. Melrose significantly improved the operational performance of the businesses and sold a large part of McKechnie for more than the original acquisition price for both businesses in July 2007. On 31 August 2007 shareholders received a return of capital of £220 million (together with dividends equalling approximately 95% of the original capital).

On the 1 July 2008 Melrose completed the acquisition of FKI plc for a total consideration including debt, of just under £1 billion. FKI is a major international diversified engineering group with world leading positions in its specialised business areas of lifting products and services, hardware, energy technology products and automated logistic solutions.
